Cover of A Letter to the Asian American Church.

A wonderful new book, A Letter to the Asian American Church: Embracing the Call, was released last month. Sixteen Asian American pastors and church leaders across the United States contributed their accumulated wisdom so that subsequent generations of pastors and leaders could benefit from their experiences. Steve S. Chang acted as editor, and SOLA Network published the book.

This collection of essays touches on diverse topics like assimilation; multilingualism; first-, second-, and third-generation integration; exilic experiences; and dealing with shame and guilt. Each contributor sheds light on the experiences of Asian believers over several generations as they seek to find their place in American multicultural, majority cultural, or Asian American churches.

Editing this book opened my eyes to the rich diversity Asian believers bring to my own church, a majority culture church, and I now have conversation starters for the Asian believers sitting near me every Sunday. This book is not only for Asian American pastors and leaders. Any pastor or leader who desires to better understand the mixed cultures in their churches will gain insight into how to befriend and minister to attendees not only from Asian cultures but also from many other cultures. As an ordinary pew-sitting believer in a large suburban church, I also recommend this to anyone who simply wants to get to know and understand their fellow Christians from around the world who sit near them every week.

A Letter to the Asian American Church: Embracing the Call is available from Amazon. An interview with editor Steve S. Chang, a synopsis of the book, the Table of Contents, and bios of the contributors is here.
